Information on Blacktail Deer

One of the more commonly hunted deer species is the blacktail deer. Please enjoy this article filled with deer hunting tips on hunting the blacktail deer. Blacktail deer are so called because of the black tip found on their tails. Generally smaller than whitetail deer, some specimens have been found to grow to trophy sizes. Blacktail deer are not usually thought of to have such trophy potential, however some areas breed blacktail deer that grow antler that reach over twenty inches up to thirty inches.

While a completely different species from mule deer, they blacktail deer were originally thought to be a subspecies of mule deer. Blacktail deer are relatives of both the whitetail and mule deer, but have some clear differences with their cousins.

One of the specific and somewhat confusing differences blacktail deer are known for is that their antler sizes do not always match with their body sizes, though among whitetail and mule deer, there is always a relation between body mass and antler size. Also, the location of larger specimens of the animal differs from its cousins: when you head north, you generally find larger whitetail and mule deer, but you have to head south to find larger blacktail deer.

Blacktail deer are found mostly in British Columbia, western Oregon, Washington and northern California, stretching north into the Alaskan panhandle. However, Boone and Crockett identifies the boundaries of the Columbian blacktail to extend from central British Columbia, south to Monterey Bay in California. While blacktails are found in other areas, Boone and Crockett recognizes only these boundaries because of the possibilities of cross breeding between mule deer and blacktail deer in other areas.

There are a host of difficulties involved when hunting blacktail deer. Some hunters who have hunted both whitetail and blacktail deer have even claimed that blacktail deer are more of a challenge, though not because blacktails are smarter.

Among the difficulties is that blacktails can only be hunted during the hot months of July to October, when the temperature is higher than any other time of the year. This means that blacktail rarely move much during the day, making them even more difficult to spot, instead preferring to move at night when it is cooler. Hunters will also be affected by the heat itself, making the hunt tiring and difficult.
