Legislature Proposes Lead Ban
The loonies are back at it again! Eight Washington state representatives recently signed onto a House Bill that will make fishing with small lead weights in Washington illegal. House Bill 2241 will outlaw the use of lead weighted hooks less than one ounce and fishing sinkers less than an ounce and smaller than one inch. The EPA has repeatedly rejected such bans over the years citing a lack of scientific evidence that fishing weights propose a health risk. Loon advocates in Washington argue that lead fishing weights significantly impact loon populations here, yet only 9 loon mortalities have been cited in the last 13 years from lead ingestion. Ironically the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife reports that the loon population in Washington is actually increasing.

Commission Calls for Reduced Columbia Sturgeon Catch
For the third straight year fishery managers from Washington and Oregon plan to reduce the allowable catch of sturgeon on the lower Columbia River. The commission is proposing a 38 percent harvest reduction. Biologists estimate that the population of keeper-sized sturgeon has declined by 50 percent in the past 4 years. Increased predation from sea lions and a drop in smelt and lamprey population are two factors that may have led to the decline.
Flood Advisory for Western Washington
The National Weather Service is calling for up to 3 inches of rain on the Olympic Peninsula and 2 inches of rain in the Willipa Hills. Heavy rains combined with this past weeks snowfall has put all of the counties in Western Washington on flood watch. That includes the counties in Pugetropolis where steelheaders are facing a February 1st closure.
